Guiding Principles

  1. Evidence over attestation. Self-reported compliance is insufficient for AI-assisted workflows. Design controls that produce verifiable artifacts -- commit metadata, scan logs, review records -- rather than relying on team declarations.

  2. Automate the audit trail. Every manual compliance step is a step that will be skipped under deadline pressure. Embed evidence collection into CI/CD pipelines and toolchain integrations so that compliance data is a byproduct of delivery, not a separate activity.

  3. Apply risk-proportionate controls. Not every AI interaction carries the same risk. A developer using AI to generate a unit test has a different risk profile than one using AI to write authentication logic. Calibrate control intensity to the actual risk level of the activity.

  4. Govern the tool boundary, not the developer. Focus controls on what enters and leaves AI tools (input data classification, output license scanning) rather than attempting to monitor every keystroke. Boundary controls scale; surveillance does not.

  5. Stay current or become irrelevant. AI regulation is evolving rapidly across jurisdictions. Build a systematic process for monitoring regulatory changes and translating them into control updates within a defined SLA.
